Is Career Counselling Necessary Before Intermediate Admission?

Choosing a stream after Class 10 can look simple. MPC. BiPC. MEC. CEC. Pick one and move on.
But for a 15-year-old, it’s one of the first decisions that shapes the next two years: the subjects they study, the entrance exams they prepare for, and the degrees they can consider afterwards.
So is career counselling necessary before Intermediate admission? We believe it’s extremely valuable. Not because a counsellor should decide a child’s career, but because students and parents often make this decision with incomplete information.
What students and parents usually say
| Students say | Parents say |
|---|---|
| “I got good marks in Maths.” | “MPC has more opportunities.” |
| “I want to become a doctor.” | “Doctors get a lot of respect.” |
| “My cousin got a ₹45 lakh package.” | “Engineering is a safe career.” |

None of these are bad reasons. But on their own, they don’t tell you whether a path suits this particular student.
A student may score well in Maths but dislike the kind of problem-solving engineering demands. Another may want medicine but underestimate how long the road is. Someone may have heard about a high-paying career without knowing what the day-to-day work looks like.
That’s where counselling helps.
Start with the student, not the career
Before asking “what career should my child pursue?”, ask “what kind of learner is my child?” A good counselling conversation explores:
- Which subjects the student genuinely enjoys, not just scores well in
- How they approach difficult problems
- Whether they lean towards analytical, scientific, creative or people-oriented work
- How they handle pressure
- Strengths beyond exam marks
- What they actually know about the careers they’re considering
- What the family expects, and whether the student shares those expectations
The point isn’t to put a label on a 15-year-old. It’s to make a better-informed decision.
What happens when the stream doesn’t fit
The problem isn’t only lower marks. A capable student can spend months, even years, trying to succeed on a path that doesn’t suit their interests or the way they learn.
- The student loses motivation.
- Parents wonder why a previously strong child is suddenly struggling.
- Teachers find themselves pushing a student who has lost interest.
Often, the issue isn’t ability. The student is simply on the wrong path. (We’ve also written about the jump from Class 10 to Intermediate.)
What counselling is not
Good counselling shouldn’t say: “You’re good at Maths, so you must become an engineer.”
And it shouldn’t promise: “This career suits you, so you will definitely succeed.”
Interests and abilities keep developing through Intermediate. Counselling should give clarity, not a permanent verdict. A career test, too, is a conversation starter. It doesn’t predict a fixed career or guarantee a rank.
Starting points by stream

A checklist for families before admission
- ☐ Has the student said, in their own words, why they want this stream?
- ☐ Do they know which entrance exams this stream leads to?
- ☐ Have they spoken to someone who studied or works in that field?
- ☐ Have parents and student discussed expectations openly?
- ☐ Have you visited the college and asked how it supports students who struggle?
- ☐ Has the student had a counselling conversation, with a parent present?

How this works at Sri Amogha

The principle is simple: before deciding what to teach a student, understand the student. Clarity doesn’t guarantee success. But it gives a student confidence in the direction they’ve chosen, and that confidence helps them stay motivated when things get hard.
We’ve written more on this in our earlier piece, career counselling after Class 10.
Frequently asked questions
When should students take career counselling?
Ideally before choosing their Intermediate stream, so the family can understand options before the admission decision.
Should parents attend career counselling?
Yes. The decision affects the whole family. Having parents present makes it an informed discussion instead of leaving the student to decide alone.
Can career counselling guarantee a student’s future career?
No. Good counselling gives guidance and clarity, not guaranteed outcomes. Students change as they learn more about themselves.
Is career counselling only for confused students?
No. Even confident students benefit from checking whether their expectations and strengths match their choice.
What should students consider before choosing MPC or BiPC?
Marks are one factor. Also consider interests, learning style, how they handle the stream’s workload, career goals and the entrance exams or degrees it leads to.
Is the career test at Sri Amogha free?
Yes, for students who visit the SR Nagar campus. Call or WhatsApp +91 91000 59966 to arrange a time.
