CEC Full Form: Civics, Economics and Commerce
Sri Amogha Junior College · Updated 31 October 2026

CEC is the familiar name for the Intermediate group traditionally called Civics, Economics and Commerce. The subject earlier called Civics is now called Political Science. Families and colleges continue to use the name CEC. The group is worth exploring for students interested in business, the economy, government and public life.
Students comparing commerce groups after Class 10 should understand the subjects first, then check the requirements of possible future courses. At Sri Amogha Junior College in Hyderabad, CEC is offered through CCP — the Classic Commerce Program, alongside MEC.

What are the subjects in CEC?
Political Science (commonly called Civics)
Explore how government, public institutions, rights and responsibilities shape society. Students practise reading an idea, explaining it and connecting it with public life.
Economics
Understand questions about people, production, consumption, markets and the economy. Economics brings together concepts, examples and numerical reasoning.
Commerce
Study business and accounting ideas, including how business information is recorded and understood. Accuracy, practice and clear reasoning matter.
The Intermediate course also includes the applicable language subjects. Ask the college for the current subject list, syllabus, paper pattern and assessment details for your intake. Use the official TGBIE website for board information.
How is CEC different from MEC?
The main group-subject difference is Civics/Political Science in CEC and Mathematics in MEC. Both groups include Economics and Commerce.
A student considering a degree that requires Class 12 Mathematics needs to check that requirement before choosing a group. CEC also involves calculations in Commerce and Economics, and some entrance tests include numerical aptitude.
Read our MEC vs CEC comparison for a fuller explanation of Mathematics, subject interests and future course eligibility.
What can a student explore after CEC?
Examples include commerce, management, law, communication and some social-science or creative-study routes. Students interested in professional qualifications should check the entry and examination rules of the relevant professional body.
These examples illustrate possibilities and are not a complete list or a guarantee of eligibility. Degree and entrance requirements vary by institution and application year. Explore our CEC career-options guide, shortlist a few courses and discuss their official requirements with a counsellor.
Who might enjoy CEC?
CEC is worth exploring when a student is curious about business, economic questions and public issues, and is ready to read, write, calculate and explain ideas. A conversation with a teacher can help the student understand what the actual work involves.
Look at sample lessons and ask the student what they find interesting. Compare that with the subjects required for a few future courses. Choose with a clearer picture of the work ahead.
Common questions about CEC
Is CEC a commerce group?
Yes. CEC includes Commerce and Economics with Civics/Political Science. At SAJC it is one of the subject combinations offered through the Classic Commerce Program.
Is Mathematics a core subject in CEC?
Mathematics is not one of its three core group subjects. Calculations and numerical reasoning still matter in Commerce, Economics and some future entrance tests.
