JEE and EAPCET: Choosing an MPC Preparation Path
Sri Amogha Junior College · Updated 21 October 2026

Are you a student who just passed Class 10 and is wondering what path to choose — IIT-JEE or EAMCET? You’re not alone. Every year, thousands of students stand at this crucial crossroad, confused about national and state-level engineering entrance exams. This guide will help you clearly understand the difference and choose the path that suits your aspirations.
National vs. State-Level Entrance Exams: Key Differences
After Class 10, students aiming for engineering have two major pathways:
IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination)
- A national-level engineering entrance exam.
- Conducted for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded institutions.
- Highly competitive, with lakhs of students appearing from across the country.
- It consists of two levels:
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
EAMCET / EAPCET (Engineering Agricultural and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test)
- A state-level entrance exam.
- Conducted for admission to state-affiliated engineering colleges.
- Different states have different versions:
- Telangana → TS EAMCET
- Andhra Pradesh → AP EAMCET (now EAPCET)
- Karnataka → KCET
- Gujarat → GUJCET
- Suitable for students targeting state universities like Osmania University, JNTU, etc.
Simply Put:
- IIT-JEE is for those who want to study at the national-level institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
- EAMCET (or EAPCET) is a state-level exam for admission into engineering colleges affiliated with universities like JNTU, Osmania University, etc.

A SAJC explainer comparing IIT-JEE with the state entrance route formerly known as EAMCET and now called EAPCET.

Why Do Students Prepare for IIT-JEE?
While only a small percentage may eventually enter IITs, many students choose to prepare for IIT-JEE because:
It prepares them for other reputed private universities like:
- VIT
- BITS Pilani (Know BITSAT vs IIT JEE)
- SRM
- Amrita
These are often deemed universities or to be deemed universities and have their own selection processes, but JEE preparation helps strengthen core concepts.
Choose the intended preparation route
Discuss the student’s subject understanding, goals and preferred route with the academic team. Ask about the actual teaching, practice and support for the chosen batch; do not treat a programme label as a ranking of students.
