Is AI Taking Away Jobs? A Perspective for Students
Sri Amogha Junior College · Updated 31 October 2026

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most talked-about topics today. Everywhere you look, there are headlines about machines replacing humans, automation taking over, and jobs disappearing. As a student planning your future, it’s natural to wonder:
“Will AI take away all the jobs? Should I be worried about my career choices?”
AI is changing how some tasks are done. Its effects differ across fields, and no one can promise exactly how a future job will change. Students can begin by understanding the work that interests them and learning how new tools are used.
Technology Always Brings Change
History has shown us that every new technology first disrupts, then transforms industries. Some jobs change, some are lost and new kinds of work can emerge. Instead, technology changes how we work and opens up new opportunities.
Take animation as an example. In the early days, animations were made frame by frame using photographs. Later, layers and cameras improved the process. Then came software tools and advanced cameras. Despite all these changes, the animation industry didn’t vanish—it evolved.
AI can change tasks, skills and demand for particular roles. The effect on an individual career depends on the field and how organisations use it.

Is AI taking away all the Jobs?
A SAJC conversation about AI, work and the career questions students are asking. This is a perspective on change, not an employment forecast.
Jobs That Change with Time
Typewriters illustrate how technology changes work. Some people moved into new roles, while others faced difficult transitions. It would be inaccurate to assume that every displaced worker simply found another job.
Another example is watchmen in schools and colleges. In the future, gates might be controlled by smart devices, facial recognition, or even robots. Does this mean the role of a watchman disappears forever? Not necessarily. It simply changes—learning additional skills may help people explore other roles, alongside the opportunities and support available to them.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution
If we look back at history:
- First Industrial Revolution – Steam engines and machines transformed industries.
- Second Industrial Revolution – Electricity and mass production changed the way we lived.
- Third Industrial Revolution – Computers and the internet revolutionized communication and work.
- Today: The Fourth Industrial Revolution – AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and automation are driving change.
Past changes show why it helps to understand a technology and the work around it. They do not guarantee that every person will benefit in the same way, or predict exactly what will happen with AI.
What This Means for Students
For you as a student, the lesson is simple: Keep learning and adapting.
Ten years ago, a software developer skilled in Java might now be working in Android or iOS development. Five years later, the same person might be building apps in an entirely new technology. The industry changes, but skilled professionals remain relevant because they continue to learn.
This is true for every field—be it science, commerce, arts, or humanities.
The Role of Education in an AI World
At Sri Amogha Junior College, we believe that education isn’t just about textbooks—it’s about preparing you for a future that is constantly evolving.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, many schools had to suddenly shift to online learning. Teachers who adapted quickly could continue teaching without interruption. Those who resisted struggled. The experience highlighted how useful it can be to learn new tools and ask for support when routines change.
That’s why we encourage our students to:
- Stay curious and open to new technologies.
- Build problem-solving and creative thinking skills.
- Focus on careers that truly interest them—because passion makes learning easier.
Final Thoughts
So, should you worry about AI taking away jobs?
- Turn questions into action: explore the work and keep learning.
- Don’t fear change—embrace it.
- Don’t chase trends blindly—choose a field you enjoy and grow in it.
